SUBJECT: Speech Summary Memo

To allow a better understanding of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's famous "I Have A Dream Speech" I will further explain the purpose and intent of this address to the nation that 28th day of August 1963.

On that day Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. led a massive element to the Washinton Mall passing the Washington Monument to the Lincoln Memorial. King stated "I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation." And so it was, King spoke about life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness as well as freedom. But these following opinionated facts are my motivation to pursue such a speech:

a. Dr. King's effective introduction was simply marvelous, he mentioned many inspiring points that include: a statement with two meanings, "America has given the Negro people a bad check, a check which has come back marked "insufficient funds." But we refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt. We refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation. So we have come to cash this check — a check that will give us upon demand the riches of freedom and the security of justice." And a statement that somewhat resembles an idiom it follows: "Now is the time to lift our nation from the quick sands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood". These are very powerful statements just reading them can bring a sense of understanding.

b. The statement "Those who hope that the Negro needed to blow off steam and will now be content will have a rude awakening if the nation returns to business as usual” I assume refers to evidence of effective overall organization. There will be neither rest nor tranquility in America until the Negro is granted his citizenship rights. The whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundations of our nation until the bright day of justice emerges." To me this means, the African-American race will not cease its actions until there is equality amongst all human beings alike, yet another powerful statement.

c. Dr. King also used the word "we" on numerous occasions which registers in my mind, a verbal signpost to create coherence or likeness. The use of the word we makes others feel as though they are alike in some ways and he's not just another guy trying to win my vote for compensation.

d. In this speech Dr. King also emphasizes the main points, freedom and liberty. That was his sole purpose for delivering this speech at such a time as this. Not considering the fact that this speech was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize the following year, 1965.

e. Dr King's focus on his audiences benefits were that of repetitiously using the term "negro" which delivered a sense of belonging to a certain category. I whenever using this terminology whatever was said I would know it was directed to me whether good or bad. This alone was not beneficial, The I Have A Dream portion of the speech considerably focused on the audience, no regards to skin color. f. The ever so warming tone Dr. King presented made me feel as though the speech was specifically directed to me. I assume many other people feel this way also. Mrs. Jonasz, I hope this summary reaches you well. Please e-mail me upon reading, so that I may be able to answer any questions that you may happen to have.

Assignment 9.10

DATE: April 27, 2009

TO: Mark Anderson, Dean of Students

FROM: David White, Student

SUBJECT: Phi Beta Lambda Chapter

Dear Mr. Anderson:

As student project leader, I'm pleased to inform you on many other thriving Phi Beta Lambda chapters around the globe. After describing the chapter in my background, I will discuss two informative procedures in starting this organization.

Background: In preparation for this project, I researched website http://www.fbla-pbl.org/, which gave me an abundance of information. Of this information I noticed, Future Business Leaders of America-Phi Beta Lambda (FBLA-PBL) is a nonprofit education association with a quarter million students preparing for careers in business and business related fields. FBLA-PBL has four divisions:
  • FBLA, for high school students
  • FBLA-Middle Level for junior high, middle, and intermediate school students
  • Phi Beta Lambda for postsecondary students; and
  • Professional Division for business people, FBLA-PBL alumni, educators, and parents who support the goals of the association.

FBLA-PBL is headquartered in Reston, Virginia. The FBLA concept was developed in 1937 by Dr. Hamden L. Forkner of Columbia University. The first high school chapter was chartered in Johnson City, Tennessee on February 3, 1942. In 1958, the first PBL collegiate chapter was chartered in Iowa. The Professional Division, originally the Alumni Division, began in 1979. Joining FBLA-PBL in 1994 was the FBLA-Middle Level for students in grades 5-9.

FBLA-PBL is the largest business career student organization in the world. The high school division has 215,000 members, while the postsecondary division reaches over 11,000 college students. The newest group, FBLA-Middle Level, is growing with nearly 15,000 student members. Finally, the Professional Division has reached over 3,000 members. Over 11,000 advisers round out the group. Exclusive membership and career recognition programs are designed for each division to provide additional personal and chapter development opportunities.

Work Completed: Mr. Anderson, acquiring a FBLA-PBL chapter here on our campus would benefit the students tremendously:

  • No need for school funds, FBLA-PBL is funded by membership dues, conference fees, corporate contributions, and grants. FBLA-PBL is recognized by the Association for Career and Technical Education, International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education, National Association of Parliamentarians, National Association of Secondary School Principals, National Business Education Association, and the U.S. Department of Education.
  • Builds Character, FBLA-PBL sponsors conferences and seminars for members and advisers. These programs are designed to foster the development of business leadership skills.
  • Occupies idle minds, FBLA-PBL's National Awards Program recognizes and rewards excellence in a broad range of business and career-related areas. Through state-based competition at the spring State Leadership Conferences, students compete in events testing their business knowledge and skills. Top state winners then are eligible to compete for honors at the National Leadership Conference each summer.

Within the previous week I conducted a survey regarding how many business students our campus contains. The numbers show 39, of the 39 students who completed the survey 31 stated they would appreciate a FBLA-PBL chapter to call their own. Registration for the chapter is rather plausible, one has to obtain the website provided earlier in this letter and join, a faculty sponsor is, however needed in order to maintain the membership.

Anticipated Problems: You should be aware of this minor complication for sponsoring this chapter.

1. In the event that not enough students join or register we will be forfeited and a mandatory fee has to be compensated for the absence of members.

By April 30 you'll have my final report providing the names and contact information of all alleged participants . Interviews for membership will be scheduled upon your decision to fund your students for this great cause.

Assignment 1

DATE: April 13, 2009

TO: All Employees

FROM: David White, CEO

SUBJECT: All American Eats, CHANGE OF POLICY

ALCON,
To reduce the numerous tardiness complaints made against you, we've decided to alter the recent policy. Effective today, all tardy personnel will be flagged through the manager's discretion.

The recent policy was voted as not as effective as we intially intended, using facts from the last employment census. Each department employee is required to arrive to work no later than ten minutes after the appointed time. The correct procedures follow:

1. Sleeping the night prior to working is essential, rewarding yourself with enough sleep can benefit you tremendously. 6-8 hours of sleep is encouraged!

2. Setting your alarm one hour before normal wake-up will correct any tardiness and is highly benefitial to good work ethics.

3. Preparing your uniform the night before is proven to save you approximately fifteen minutes every morning. This action is also recommended.

4. Procrastination is the leading cause in all tardy occasions, therefore, it is highly discouraged.

Following the procedures will save the respect you have created for yourself and the way customers and fellow employees view you. Call me at EXT. 3456 if you have any questions about this memorandum.

5.16 E-mail Response

To: Kathy Lewis-Adler klewis@marshallassociates.com
From: David White dwhite@marshallassociates.com
Subject: RESPONSE TO CASUAL-DRESS POLICY
Cc:
Bcc:
---------------------------------------------------------------

Kathy,
Our team decided to reply to your questions in a unified manner, in order to change the Marshall & Associate's policy. The casual business attire adopted several years ago is failing us as a company. Some employees want to look more professional but maintain a casual appearance. It is true; times have changed, so why not us? The responses to your questions follows:

  • Acceptable wear on dress-down days would be: denim jeans and/or skirts, dress shirts, and blazer-like jackets. This attire also holds a more proffesional appearance but isn't as formal as the current policy. Avoided wear would be: flip flops, spandex pants and provocative clothing.

  • Restrictions on body art and piercing in our policy currently states: "...tatoos or other form of body art is acceptable as long as it doesn't appear on the neck or hands." The team decided that exotic body art on other body parts (ex: ears, mid-back, ankle, arms...etc.) can get to be inappropriate in some cases. This can be further explained in the new policy or upon request.

  • Supervisors reacting to innappropriate clothing. If someone wears offensive, tasteless, revealing, or sloppy clothing we believe that the supervisor has the right to send someone home.

  • Developing a uniform definition of acceptable casual attire is possible, it includes: Nice clean, non-offensive, tasteless, or revealing clothing. It can be further explained in an uniform pamplet or book depicting the correct way and upkeep of the work place uniform.

  • Establishing a would have its disadvantages; however the advantages would outwiegh them.
  1. There would be a sense of pride in the new uniform policy.
  2. A sense of importance would be presented to the employees.
  3. Professionalism would bring attention to Marshall & Associates's.

  • Should we refine our dress-down policy or eliminate it? As a group, the employees decided we should eliminate the current dress-down policy and refine upon request to do so. We sought to eliminate the old policy because it allows enough freedom to disregard the effort put into depriving the document.

Please give careful considerations to our efforts in establishing a new more uniform dress policy by providing concise information at our next management meeting April 22.

Assignment 1.12

Reebok would benefit tremendously in sales if they would have diversified it's staff at that time. By diversifying its staff Reebok would have broadened it's customer range, opening many opportunities for example businesses in other countries like "Korea", or maybe even all over the world. I personally like the variety of clothing that Reebok offers, but fortunately I live in the time where Reebok has diversified. My appreciation is the example that justifies my paragraph. Reebok is a great company now that it does not have a single race operating it's corporation.

Assignment 1.10

If I were in charge of this particular hotel, I would introduce a training program for all working personnel, not to segregate Thai employees from foreign managers. As people we often underestimate the capabilities of others based on their language or culture. I believe ninety-five percent of these underestimations are incorrect. If someone can speak the same language as me does not make that person an expert at understanding the language, if that makes sense. Therefore, we find ourselves with more mistakes than we originally planned to have. If I were to introduce these alleged programs I would include English lessons for Thai employees and a general Resort/Hotel refreshment course for every employee. Explaining Western customs to the Thai would give them a better understanding of the culture's humor and/or sarcasm, which would benefit this particular hotel tremendously. Besides, ninety percent of the guests are non-Thai.

Introduction: What rationale did you have for taking this class?

My name is David White, I am 18 years of age, and I am currently employed by the U.S. Army. I'm also currently enrolled in Central Texas College's course Business Writing. The rationale behind taking this course is to better myself in education. I also would like to improve my GT score. In order to get promoted in the military you seem to have to be better than the next guy at something else besides PT or Marksmanship. I would like to have some form of degree in my name, so what better way to get it than by going to school. But of all these reasons the most important would be to complete an Associate's degree in General Studies. One of my main goals at this time in my life.
